چکیده

We use L-band Advanced Land Observation Satellite PALSAR data to infer the distribution of subsurface fault slip during the Tarlay earthquake (Mw 6.8) in eastern Myanmar. We find the total length of surface rupture is approximately 30 km, with nearly 2 m maximum surface offset along the westernmost section of the Nam Ma fault (the Tarlay segment). Finite-fault inversions constrained by Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and pixel-tracking data suggest that fault slip is concentrated within the upper 10 km of the crust. Maximum slip exceeds 4 m at a depth between 3 and 5 km. Comparison between field measurements and near-fault deformation obtained from the InSAR range-offset result suggests about 10%–80% of displacement occurred within a 1 km wide zone off the main surface fault trace. This off-fault deformation may explain the shallow slip deficit that we observed during this earthquake. We estimate a recurrence interval for Tarlay-like events to be 1600– 6500 yrs at this section of the Nam Ma fault. A detailed paleoseismological study is essential to clarify the slip behavior and the earthquake recurrence interval of the Nam Ma fault.

The 25 October 2010 Mentawai tsunami earthquake ( Mw 7 . 8 ) and the tsunami hazard presented by shallow megathrust ruptures

[1] The 25 October 2010 Mentawai, Indonesia earthquake (Mw 7.8) ruptured the shallow portion of the subduction zone seaward of the Mentawai islands, off‐shore of Sumatra, generating 3 to 9 m tsunami run‐up along southwestern coasts of the Pagai Islands that took at least 431 lives. Analyses of teleseismic P, SH and Rayleigh waves for finite‐fault source rupture characteristics indicate ∼90 s ru...

The complex rupture process of the 1996 deep Flores , Indonesia earthquake ( Mw 7 . 9 ) from teleseismic P - waves

From an analysis of broadband teleseismic Pwaveforms we resolve the complex rupture characteristics of the 17 June 1996, Flores earthquake (Mw 7.9, depth 590 km). This earthquake was unusual because of its large rupture length and the variation in rupture velocity and stress drop. The 20 s rupture propagated westward at 2-3 km/s to a distance of 20-30 km, and eastward at 4 km/s over 75 km. Aver...

Frictional properties of incoming pelagic sediments at the Japan Trench: implications for large slip at a shallow plate boundary during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake

The 2011 Tohoku earthquake (Mw 9.0) produced a very large slip on the shallow part of a megathrust fault that resulted in destructive tsunamis. Although multiple causes of such large slip at shallow depths are to be expected, the frictional property of sediments around the fault, particularly at coseismic slip velocities, may significantly contribute to large slip along such faults. We have thu...

[1] Using a hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallel finite element method for spontaneous rupture and seismic wave propagation simulations, we investigate features in rupture propagation, slip distribution, seismic radiation, and seafloor deformation of the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake to gain physical insights into the event. With simplified shallow dipping (10 ) planar fault geometry, 1D velocity str...

Source process with heterogeneous rupture velocity for the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake based on 1-Hz GPS data

A rupture model with varying rupture front expansion velocity for the March 11, 2011, Tohoku-Oki earthquake was obtained by the joint inversion of high-rate Global Positioning System (GPS) data and ocean bottom GPS/acoustic (OB-GPS) data. The inverted rupture velocity with a complex distribution gradually increases near the hypocenter and shows rapid rupture expansion at the shallowest part of ...
